The conference-closet dilemma

Standing in front of a closet full of choices can somehow make it harder to decide what to wear. In the video, I work through vintage jackets, favorite golf pants and skirts, designer scarves, shoes, and the layers I usually rely on for professional events.

The goal is not to create one perfect outfit. It is to build several combinations that can handle long days, changing temperatures, and different conference settings.

Start with layers

Conference rooms can be surprisingly cold even when the temperature outside is well over 100 degrees. A fitted jacket over a simple dress or top creates an easy layer that can come off between sessions.

I also like pieces that can be mixed rather than outfits that only work one way. A jacket with a defined waist, a bright layer underneath, or a beautiful scarf can change the feel without requiring an entirely different wardrobe.

Style still has to work in Arizona heat

In the video, I joke about working in golf skirts during 115-degree weather and remembering how the soles of dark shoes felt on hot blacktop when I first moved to Arizona. That experience teaches a practical lesson: fabric, footwear, color, and time outdoors matter.

A polished outfit is only useful if you can move comfortably, walk between sessions, and remain focused on the people around you.

Scarves collected from around the world and favorite shoes can add personality, even if I am still deciding exactly how to style them. The most successful conference look is the one that feels professional without becoming a costume.

Start with a few pieces that work together: two comfortable bottoms, several tops, one jacket or cardigan, and a dress or alternate outfit if an evening event calls for it. Choose a base color so the shoes and outer layer work with more than one combination. A favorite scarf or a brighter top can supply the personality without filling another suitcase.

Before packing, try each outfit while sitting, standing, and carrying the bag you will use during the day. Check that a jacket still feels comfortable with a full-length sleeve underneath and that you can walk easily in the shoes. An outfit that only works while standing in front of a mirror may feel very different after hours of sessions.

Pack around the day you expect to have

• Session essentials: a notebook, charger, phone, and a bag that leaves your hands free for introductions.
