San Marcos is located in North San Diego County and is home to approximately 83,000 people. It is bordered by Carlsbad to the West, Encinitas to the Southwest, Vista to the Northwest, and Escondido to the Southeast. The historical town of San Marcos was originally at today’s intersection of Grand Avenue and Rancho Santa Fe Road.
San Marcos is known for its two colleges, Palomar College and CSU San Marcos. Palomar College has a 200 acre campus and is a public community college. There are over 30,000 full and part-time students and students are charged a mere $26 per unit. CSU San Marcos has a 300 acre campus and enrolls about 9,000 students.

San Marcos is known for its golf courses (The Twin Oaks Golf Course in particular), recent growth of the high tech sector, and community involvement. San Marcos has a larger than average retiree population than that of San Diego in general. A multitude of services are offered in the city for these people.
